Disconnected -Now What?
We are hearing so much today about losing our internet connection and losing “our grid”, I began to wonder what might happen if this occurred, and what would be the possible outcome. I decided to see what I could learn from AI and the following is the story of a family that “might” experience such an outcome.
I found the story very telling and the outcome offers a positive outcome for many.
The Smith family was your average American family. They had two kids, Jenny and Michael, a lovely home in the suburbs, and a busy schedule filled with work, school, and countless activities. But one day, their lives took an unexpected turn when a massive storm hit their town, causing widespread power outages and knocking out the internet connection for days. Disconnected – What Happens Next?
Without the internet, the Smith family felt like they had stepped back in time. At first, they panicked. How would they survive without their precious Wi-Fi? But little did they know, that this sudden disconnection from the digital world would prove to be a blessing in disguise.
Without the constant distractions of social media and online entertainment, the Smiths found themselves spending more quality time together. They would sit around the dinner table, engaging in deep conversations instead of scrolling through their phones. They rediscovered the joy of board games, and laughter filled their home once more.

They visited the public library, where they found a wealth of information in old-fashioned books. They even enjoyed talking to the librarians, who offered guidance and assistance.
Grocery shopping became an adventure. Without the ability to make online orders, the family had to go to the store and interact with other people. They discovered new products and bonded with their friendly neighborhood grocer. Shopping became less of a chore and more of a social experience.
When it came to work, Mr. Smith faced some initial challenges. As an architect, he heavily relied on online resources and communication with his clients. However, he quickly adapted and found alternative ways to manage his projects and stay connected. He scheduled face-to-face meetings, picked up the phone to speak with clients, and utilized good old-fashioned pen and paper for his designs.
The lack of internet forced the Smith family to be resourceful in other aspects of their lives too. They reached out to friends and family for advice, recommendations, and support. Instead of searching online for the best doctor in town, they asked neighbors and friends for their trusted physicians. They learned that their community was full of resources and expertise just waiting to be tapped into.
Family gatherings took on a whole new meaning. Their time together became more meaningful and focused without the distraction of smartphones and laptops. They played games, shared stories, and truly enjoyed each other’s company. It reminded them of simpler times when technology wasn’t such an integral part of their lives.
As the days without the internet turned into weeks, the Smiths began to appreciate the slower pace of life. They found joy in the simple things like taking walks in the park, exploring their town, and nurturing their hobbies. They spent more time outdoors, connecting with nature instead of staring at screens.

When the internet finally returned, the Smiths were not as excited as they thought they would be. They had realized that life didn’t revolve around the virtual world. They had discovered a deeper sense of connection, both within their family and with their community.
